How to answer “Tell me about yourself”

It's the first question in almost every interview, and it sets the tone. Don't recite your resume — tell a tight, deliberate story with this framework.

Use present, past, future

  • Present: who you are now in one line — "I'm a product manager focused on B2B activation."
  • Past: the experience that got you here and one standout result.
  • Future: why this role is the natural next step.

Keep it to 60–90 seconds. You're framing the conversation, not delivering your whole history.

Tailor it to the role

Choose the parts of your story that map to what this job needs. The same candidate should answer differently for a startup and an enterprise role.

Practice out loud

Reading it isn't the same as saying it. Rehearse with the Interview Prep practice mode until it feels natural rather than memorised.
